Stories From California

I fell in love with being a reporter when I got an internship at the RIAS in Berlin, weeks after die Berliner Mauer between East und West came down. I moved to Los Angeles in 2003 when I was assigned to be the head of German public radio’s West coast studio. In 2008, I became the California correspondent for Weltreporter, the largest network of German freelance foreign correspondents. I mostly work for Deutsches Public Radio, LA’s NPR station KCRW, and the journalism collective RiffReporter. Oscar Recipe

After reporting about the Oscars for almost ten years I would really like to have one of the cute golden guys for myself. We have just the perfect space for it on the mantelpiece! So I set out to find the perfect recipe to win an Oscar.

Im Haus - also keine Versinkende-Absätze-Gefahr! Schnitzeljagd! Also nichts wie ran ans Ausfüllen des RSVP-Formulars.

Love Letter to The American Way of Life

Granted: the weather was extremely cold, grey and miserable on my last trip to Germany. But it was not only due to the sun that I took a deep breath of relief after returning to California. It happened the morning after coming back. I took the bike to the market to pick up some essentials for breakfast. And there it hit me: strangers smiling at me, a senior passing me on a skateboard and a guy wearing an oversized funny hat greeting me enthusiastically: “What a nice day for a bike ride!” How can you not be happy about that? Unfortunately I am pretty sure some Germans would not even smile but instead complain about this stupid superficial cheerfulness. Unlike them I had missed this friendliness and slightly crazy individualism. I felt a sense of optimism in the air that is hard to put into words and essential for my love of the ‘American Way’ .

Fight for the Hollywood Sign

After more than eight years of living in Los Angeles I dread nothing more than the unavoidable Hollywood-trip with visitors to the most famous sidewalk of the world and a nice view to the most famous sign of the world. Even though I try to prepare my guests for the imminent let-down these trips are destined to end in huge disappointment about the lack of glamour and the absence of movie stars.
