Stories From California

I fell in love with being a reporter when I got an internship at the RIAS in Berlin, weeks after die Berliner Mauer between East und West came down. I moved to Los Angeles in 2003 when I was assigned to be the head of German public radio’s West coast studio. In 2008, I became the California correspondent for Weltreporter, the largest network of German freelance foreign correspondents. I mostly work for Deutsches Public Radio, LA’s NPR station KCRW, and the journalism collective RiffReporter. On a Vegan Mission in Inglewood

"I want to have whatever she's having!" was my first thought the minute chef Miss B. jump-danced from behind the kitchen counter towards me, her smile and the neon yellow silk scarf wrapped around her hair brightening up the restaurant shouting "There is the German reporter with a microphone!". She told me she had started her vegan diet in 1990 when she was 40. She still looks that same age!

The Head Scarf - A Conversation Starter

Sama Wareh was born in California, her parents came from Damascus Syria to the United States. In life and art she explores differences and similarities between cultures and traditions. Look at her series "A Native American Met a Bedouin". The thirty year old artist and adventurer started to wear a head scraf in sixth grade. A decision related to her mother and Batman! She did not take the scarf of since then - well of course she does not wear the same shawl every day, but she never goes without covering her head. Over time  Sama added a hat and a feather to the traditional clothing she wears in a fashion that makes her look more like a Cowgirl than devote Muslim. But don't be fooled.

Homeless in Paradise

Los Angeles is famous for its Hollywood glamour and laid back beach atmosphere. Lesser known is the city's status as homeless capitol of the United States. More than 58 thousand people live on the streets, in parks, cars, doubled up with family and friends, hop from couch to couch or are cramped together in tiny motel rooms.
